How to Workout with Knee Pain

Knee pain sucks. Plain and simple. It is one of the most common chronic injuries that we face on a day to day basis. It gets in the way of everyday activities, simple things like walking up and down stairs or sitting down or standing up.

The key to helping this pain go away is in fact exercise. It is a problem with your muscles and to help that, we once again need exercise. Problem is that it can be painful to exercise with knee pain. The most common mistake people will make is to avoid movement of the knee at all and to baby it. This is the worst thing you can do. They say “use it or lose it” and it's the truth.

So if you know you need to workout to get rid of the pain what can you do?

Here is my method; I look at the pain point, that being the knee joint. I then think about all of the surrounding muscles that overlap or use the knee joint. Hamstring, Quad, and Calf are the main big ones we will talk about for now. Think of the muscles like rubber bands. You can stretch them or shorten them but they all have to “play nice” around the knee joint. If they don't, then there will be pain. First I will lay a client down on a massage table and do some muscle testing to see which of these muscles is the problem. Once I find which muscle or is multiple of them are having issues, I can then start the process.

If a client has a really weak hamstring, from underuse or an injury 10 years ago. The fact still remains that it is “not playing nice” with the Quad and the Calf. I will then help my client with some manual resistance training to work their hamstring just barely enough so they can “feel it” . I want to give them just enough of a “dose” that we do not overdo it.  Then my client and I will return to the massage table to do more muscle testing to see if working the hamstring was helpful to our problem. If it wasn’t the problem then we simply work on the other surrounding muscles. The calf and the quad. This will be the best way for you to be able to still workout with knee pain.

Taking the problem and reverse engineering WHY you are having the pain in the first place.  This is one of my Core Methods I use when I am working with clients to help resolve pain in their body.
